Minerva medal winners at British Indoor Championships

12th December, 2023

The 2023 British Indoor Rowing Championships had a new location at the NEC – part of a huge celebration of indoor sport called FitFest. The atmosphere was buzzing with the British Weightlifting Championships, several CrossFit competitions, and the British Indoor Rowing Championships all taking part in the same space.

Two rowers from Minerva took part, Yuk Ching-Kilby and Heidi Richards, and both came away with medals! Ching competed in the LW 55-59 2k and, despite being only two weeks off her 60th birthday, came away with a very respectable 3rd place and a bronze medal.

Heidi did her usual ‘fly and die’ in the 500m and came away with the gold medal beating her nearest competitor by 11 seconds with a time of 1.39.2. Both were spurred on by the appreciated encouragement of fellow Minervan, Keri Johnson, who volunteered at the event.

Bath University did extremely well with several gold and silver medals won, and the high spot of the championships was Graham Benton breaking a 25-year-old, 2K British record in the 50-54 year group with an astonishing time of 6 mins 5 seconds.

Hopefully, next year a few more Minervans will take part – it’s a great event to boost your training in those winter months.
